BUILDING OUR TAPESTRY Trivia networking event. W hat a beautiful view of our membership a comput- er screen can provide. This year we met each other over Zoommeetings andASM-hosted virtual events. It turns out that a monitor can serve as a wonderful lens into our Society. In this issue’s ASM News we celebrate some of our many virtual events from the past few months. Check out the montage of screen shots from Leadership Days and the ASM Annual Meeting to virtual technical sessions and ASM award winners. Congratulations to all the new Fellows and ASM Awardees from 2020. The highlight of these screen sharing days was IMAT – The Virtual Edition, which drew attendees from 46 countries. With engaging technical talks, a vibrant exhibit hall experience, and creative networking events, it was an amazing way for our ASM members and the engineering community to gather. Diran Apelian, FASM, consummate speaker and vi- sionary, presented the Tues- day morning keynote at that October virtual event. He ex- panded the definition of In- dustry 4.0—which describes the work in this new age—by adding on his team’s new- ly coined and trademarked term, Industry 4.2 to refer to the worker. He cited the World Economic Forum’s emphasis on talent and the need for employers to recruit and retain the best. In addition, workers must rec- ognize that change is the one constant. So they need to be aware of megatrends and take charge of their own professional development. Apelian also described diversity in the workplace as providing a beautiful tapestry. Weaving our Society’s diversity initiatives is the new Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness (IDEA) Committee described by ASM President Diana Essock, FASM, in her column on page 70. Essock, the third woman to lead ASM, will be succeeded by Judith Todd, current ASM vice president. We’re building our tapestry. Todd is enthusiastic when describing the work of her highly interdisciplin- ary team at Penn State. In this issue’s lead article on ultrasonic characterization, she and her team share some materials and design optimization results, with ap- plications for industry and the medical field. With the multimedia approach of a professor, her article is augmented by two brief animations, accessible via the AM&P digital edition and on YouTube. Finally, a shoutout to members of the Caribbean Crew, the team I was on for the Battle of the Brains Trivia Night during IMAT – The Virtual Edition. Kudos to Tiago Pinheiro from Toronto—my favorite internationally diverse city—for being our team captain. Though the win slipped by us, I now know how many noble gases there are. And the event moderator commented that all the ASM teams had the highest scores he’s seen in his time conducting these trivia events. There’s brain power in ASM’s diversity! Our tapestry is becoming bolder and brighter. What a beautiful sight. joanne.miller@asminternational.org
