Chapter officers were able to attend webinar ses- sions on Chapter Finances, ASMConnect, Programming, and more! A Virtual Networking Mixer (truly BYOB) was even held to help officers connect with one another. Over 65 officers from various Chapters attended the virtual event with many sessions recorded and available for on-demand viewing. magazine will feature an article by Dr. Chmielus on a related topic slated for the February 2021 issue, as part of the Mate- rials Science & Coronavirus series. The second topic of the evening, “PPE for COVID” was presented by two America Makes executives, John Wilczynsk, executive director and Alexander Steeb, operations director. They co-authored the article on page 22 of this issue that is also part of the Materi- als Science & Coronavirus series. ASM Chapter Council Chair JP Singh, FASM, opens the virtual 2020 Leadership Days session on September 15. Pittsburgh Features COVID-19 Topics The ASM Pittsburgh Chapter held its first virtual meet- ing on May 21 using the Ring Central/Zoom platform. Fea- tured were two presentations related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the shortage of personal protection equip- ment (PPE). Dr. Markus Chmielus, an assistant professor in the Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Depart- ment at the University of Pittsburgh presented “Promising Reusable Respirators with 3D Printed Metal Filters.” AM&P Dr. Markus Chmielus (right) in the AM 3 lab at the University of Pittsburgh. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Liu Awarded Endowed Chair Zi-Kui Liu, FASM, recently received the endowed chair in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. His title now reads, Dorothy Pate Enright Professor of Materials Sci- ence and Engineering. Prior to the new designation, Liu was distinguished pro- fessor of materials science and engi- neering at Penn State. Liu obtained his B.S. from Central South University (China), M.S. from Uni- versity of Science and Technology, Beijing, and Ph.D. from KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden). His research activities are centered on first-principle calculations, model- ing of thermodynamic and kinetic properties, and their inte- gration in understanding defects, phase stability, and phase transformations, and designing and tailoring materials pro- cessing and properties. He was the cofounder and director of the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Cen- ter for Computational Materials Design. Liu is currently the immediate past president of ASM International.
