ITSC HOLDS SPECIAL VIRTUAL SESSION The International Thermal Spray Conference (ITSC) made history on June 18 when it held its first virtual session. To pre- view ITSC 2021 and the talks to be offered there, the 90-min- ute session was entitled “Coatings for Anti-Virus, Bacteria, and Fungus Applications.” Highlights of the event by the numbers: • 525 registrants—70% international • 354 attendees—67% of total registrants • 80% of attendees stayed for most of the session • Five sponsors • Five speakers—all international—from Australia, Canada, China, and Spain The organizers of this special session were Charles Kay, FASM, ASB Industries Inc.; John Koppes, TST Engineered Coat- ing Solutions; William Lenling, FASM, TST Engineered Coating Solutions; Rogerio Lima, National Research Council of Canada (NRC); and André McDonald, FASM, University of Alberta. The event was sponsored by ASB Industries Inc., Oerlikon Metco, Progressive Surface, Saint-Gobain, and the Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Training Centre in Surface Engineering for Advanced Materials (SEAM). SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR THERMAL SPRAY HALL OF FAME The Thermal Spray Hall of Fame, established in 1993 by the Thermal Spray Society of ASM Internation- al, recognizes and honors outstanding leaders who have made significant contributions to the science, technology, practice, education, management, and advancement of thermal spray. For a copy of the rules, nomination form, and list of previous recipients, visit tss.asminternational.org or contact maryanne.jerson@ asminternational.org. Nominations are due September 30 for recogni- tion in 2021. Fiedler SOCIETY NEWS 4 The 2021 ITSC event, to be held May 24-27 in Quebec, Canada, will focus on Versatile Surface Engineering for Envi- ronmental Solutions. Bäker Rösler Chris Berndt, FASM, TS-HoF, Swinburne University of Technology and SEAM: Australian Research Council, presented “Bio- engineering applications for thermal spray coatings: challenges and opportunities.” Javad Mostaghimi, Centre for Advanced Coating Technologies, University of Toronto, spoke on “Antibacterial copper coatings for frequently touched and heat sensitive surfaces.” Rogerio Lima, NRC, moderated the Q&A portion.
