Typically, the rate seems very slow at the begin- ning and the end, and very fast in the middle. If we plot the change rate of human civilization’s use of materials—from natural mate- rials, to man-made materials, to machines, it may be difficult to know where we are now on the evolutionary scale. But we do know that industrialization over the last several centu- ries has made major shifts in technological, socioeconomic, and cultural conditions because of so-called 1st, 2nd, and 3rd revolutions in the use of steam power, electricity, and computerization. Now in the 21st century, the 4th industrial revolution is commonly thought of as the integration of cyber-physical systems; where the physical, digital, and bio- logical worlds are seamlessly unified to form a system with many autonomous subsystems. In other words, digitization. This 4th industrial revolution gives rise to the concept of Industry 4.0, including the subcategory of Manufacturing 4.0, which includes digitizing all manufacturing steps. As manufacturing is a process to create one or more materi- als from elements in the chemical periodic table to form a product that serves one or multiple functions that benefit humanity, it is thus evident that there needs to be a Mate- rials 4.0 as an outgrowth of Manufacturing 4.0, Industry 4.0, and the 4th industrial revolution. With this concept in mind, ASM International orga- nized its second Global Materials Summit for ASM Fellows and Executives in December 2019 at Marco Island, Florida, on “The Intersection of Manufacturing and Materials in the 21st Century, The Rise of Materials 4.0.” Materials 4.0 is a phrase ASM has coined to refer to the advancement of mate- rials information integrated into the manufacturing supply chain. While Manufacturing 4.0 is driving the interaction of machines and data to optimize yield and reduce cost, the market pressure for improved product performance is driv- Liu ing innovation for materials. The need to integrate material data into design, production, and quality processes is para- mount to achieving truly “Smart Manufacturing.” As described in a McKinsey & Company report, this new paradigm is driven by four disruptions: big data, advanced analytics, human-machine interfaces, and digital-to-physi- cal transfer. These four disruptions were amply reflected in the presentations by invited speakers during the Summit. A consensus was reached that the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) established in 2011 (mgi.gov) provides a platform for the realization of Materials 4.0. ASM is positioned to lead the development and deployment of such a platform. ASM International’s digital strategy has been in development for many years, including an investment in Granta Design back in 2000, and has made a quantum leap in the last several years with the excellently crafted strategic plan in 2016 and hard work of the volunteers, employees, operational team, and Board of Trustees. In addition to the digitization of our legacy content, ASM International is developing new func- tionalities in terms of Software/Data as a Service (SaaS) through both internal development and collaborations with societies that produce and consume materials data. We welcome your suggestions and are open to collaborations that will grow ASM International digitally, interdisciplinarily, globally, and culturally by striving to be better than our best.
