It was sponsored by the ASM Northwest Pennsylvania Chapter with Dr Chetan Nikhare of the mechanical engineering program at Penn State Behrend designing the program and recruiting the students from local high schools and home schools. Nikhare also serves as the treasurer of the local Chapter. Prof. Charles A. Bennett (Chapter secretary) assisted, along with Tim Raffenner of Abbott Furnace (Chapter vice chair), and Bill Bennett (Chap- ter chair). The event was supported by the materials science and engineering program of Penn State’s College of Earth Mineral Sciences, in addition to local corporate sponsors. Other recipients have included Bill and Melinda Gates, Ste- ven Spielberg, Alan Greenspan, James Watson, Bono, and Ralph Lauren. Inamori established Kyocera at age 27 and devoted himself to the development and marketing of advanced ceramic materials. After the deregulation of Japan’s tele- communications market, he established DDI Corp. (now KDDI) with the goal of lowering long-distance calling fees. In 2010, at the age of 78, he accepted a volunteer assignment as chairman of Japan Airlines, leading it out of bankruptcy, returning it to solid profitability, and relisting it on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. As a philanthropist, he established the non- profit Inamori Foundation and the Kyoto Prize in 1984 to honor outstanding researchers and artists. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Inamori Receives Honorary Knighthood Kazuo Inamori, a global entrepreneur and philanthro- pist, received the title of Honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) from Her Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom on Novem- ber 28, 2019. The honor was bestowed in Japan by His Excellency Paul Madden, Ambassador of the United King- dom, during an investiture ceremony at the Ambassador’s residence. Inamori is the founder and chairman emeritus of Kyocera Corp., honorary adviser to KDDI Corp., honorary adviser to Japan Airlines Co., Ltd., and founder of the Inam- ori Foundation. The honorary KBE title recognizes outstand- ing achievements and contributions to society as a whole. Watanabe Watanabe Elected to Inaugural Class of Microanalysis Society Fellows Masashi Watanabe, has been recognized by the Microanalysis Soci- ety (MAS) as a member of its inaugural class of Fellows. Watanabe is an asso- ciate professor of materials science and engineering at Lehigh University’s P.C. Rossin college of Engineering and Applied Science . The MAS Fellow dis- tinction was established to recognize MAS members who have distinguished themselves through outstanding research, outreach and teaching, and service to the microanalysis community. Watanabe, who served as the MAS president from 2016 to 2018, was honored for outstanding leadership in analytical electron microscopy and the pioneering develop- ment of zeta-factor technique for quantitative STEM-XEDS microanalysis.
