HIGHL IGHTS A D V A N C E D M A T E R I A L S & P R O C E S S E S | J A N U A R Y 2 0 2 0 4 1 FROM THE FOUNDATION 2020 Vision It is now 2020—the number that means good vision. The ASM Materials Education Foundation board and staff are busy working on their own vision— for the future of K-12 materials science education. The ASM Foundation provides the base knowledge in STEM to illuminate career pathways that address the pro- jected shortfall in materials science and engineering. We introduce hands-on curriculum to provide educators with the tools they need to increase student engagement and expand the traditional classroom experience. This year is all about adding to our success with help- ful resources for teachers to bring materials science into the classroom and, of course, expanding our reach to even more students and teachers. With the help of ASMmembers, we have already reached over 11,400 teachers and know of approximately 300 materials science courses being taught in high schools. In 2020, we will hold our inaugural Teacher Insti- tute at ASM’s global headquarters to enable educators to gain in-depth knowledge on a variety of topics by working directly with industry professionals. Each year, we will focus on different topics depending on the needs of the teachers and the broader materials science education community. The Foundation champions materials science classes in high schools to engage students in STEM and help them to better understand the world around them. If you can help us spread the word to more school districts and boards of education, please put our staff in touch with any of your contacts. Those who teach materials science to high school students have achieved very positive results, opening a world of careers to brighten the future for a variety of stu- dents. You know first-hand what materials science and engi- neering has done for you and your career. You can share in the vision for a strong future for the field. Please consider leaving a lasting legacy by including the ASM Foundation in your will; by joining our Pillar Soci- ety, you will enjoy the recognition and sincere gratitude of the ASM community.
