W elcome to 2020! Every January, there is buzz around who will appear on Time magazine’s first cover of the year. Though FDR was person of the year in 1933, the publication selected Charles Franklin Ket- tering of Dayton, Ohio, as the face on the cover for the sec- ond week of January that year. Kettering was an engineer, inventor, and business leader. He started out as manager of the research laboratory at National Cash Register. He lat- er founded Delco and served as head of research at General Motors for decades. With 186 patents, he invented the electric automotive starter. Ever the tinkerer, Kettering embodied the qualities of inquisitiveness, inventiveness, and innovation. At ASM, our employees and volunteer leadership have been innovating as well, to offer new products and services to our members and customers. Here we showcase just a few items that are new for 2020: In this issue, we are excited to introduce a new department in the magazine, Machine Learning & AI (see pages 8-9). In these pages, we share the latest ways these growing disciplines are impacting materi- als science. This edition also introduces our new ASM Presi- dent Zi-Kui Liu, FASM, of The Pennsylvania State Uni- versity. See pages 22-23 to read about Liu’s fascinat- ing multi-continental life working in industry and academia. In addition, he has been a foundational contributor to computational materials science. ASM International is pleased to announce the mid-January launch of a new and improved members-only community site that will enable members to con- nect, engage, and stay informed. ASM Connect V2 is described by Bill Mahoney in his CEO Corner on page 39. The new platform will allow members to hold on- line discussions along topical areas, share best practices, and look up colleagues within a secure database. We invite you to go online and connect! The laboratories at ASM continue to expand. We have been adding new labs and equipment over the past year as described on page 42. Having state- of-the-art equipment in our educational labs allows us to offer additional train- ing courses and provides students with cutting-edge technology in a hands-on learning environment. Hot off the presses is the ASM Handbook, Volume 10, Materials Character- ization. For a sample of the content, read “Single-Crystal X-Ray Diffraction” on pages 32-34. One of the division editors for Volume 10, Erik Mueller of the NTSB, is featured on page 43 in our Contributor Spotlight. We encourage other ASM members to get involved in the development of future reference publications. But our most exciting venture for this year is IMAT 2020. The uniqueness that IMAT brings to the conference scene is a focus on integrated applied materials technologies and applications with economics, environmental issues, and en- abling digital technologies. Plan to present a paper or attend. Learn more about the February 14 Call for Papers deadline on page 1 or online at imatevent.org. As we look ahead at a year full of promise, we can be inspired by Charles Kettering’s inventive life and his own words: “Every time you tear a leaf off a cal- endar, you present a new place for new ideas and progress.” joanne.miller@asminternational.org IT’S 2020 TIME Time cover, January 9, 1933, featuring Charles Kettering.
