For a copy of the rules, nomination form, and list of previous recipients, visit tss.asminternational.org or send an email to maryanne.jerson@asminternational.org. Nominations are due September 30, 2019, for recognition in 2020. Leadership Days Awards IMAT 2020 Update Exploring Additive Manufacturing Andrzej Wojcieszynski The first International Materi- als Applications and Technologies Conference “IMAT2020” will provide a new forum to the entire materials community (scientists, engineers, and business professionals) to exchange experiences and learn about the new- est achievements inmaterials develop- ment and applications. The conference will be uniquely focused on various practical aspects of materials usage, the latest technologies for solving practical problems, and providing unique materials solutions. One of the focus areas will be additive manufacturing (AM). In the past several years, this technology has moved from laboratories into the industrial environment and is now an enabling technology—enabling manufacturing of parts and components with shapes and characteristics unattainable by other methods, and frequently simplifying the production and assembly processes. AM is growing and expanding quickly, but it still faces numerous challenges and needs to solve a number of practical problems. Because it is still a new technology, the additive manufacturing process requires much more research to optimize the pro- cessing parameters for various metallic alloys and non-me- tallic materials. There are also numerous other issues, not only technical, that must be resolved before the industry can take full advantage of this disruptive technology. At IMAT2020, a wide range of topics related to AM will be dis- cussed, including: • • Evolution of AM, state of the art of AM processes, pro- cess control, and process modeling • • Various applications for structural builds and repair, and development needs • • Business case development and cost analysis • • Post-processing, characterization of microstructure, properties, corrosion resistance, and performance • • Dimensional control, net shape capability, finishing, surface quality, and NDT • • Failure analysis of AM components • • Process qualification, certification, and specifications One goal of the IMAT2020 conference is to address all aspects of this new technology and bring together the entire materials community, including experienced and seasoned engineers as well as young professionals entering the mate- rials discipline. At IMAT2020, materials students will have an opportunity to participate in an additive manufacturing competition, in which the winner will be awarded a sum- mer internship at one of the major AM suppliers. All materi- als professionals are encouraged to participate in this new event—we are confident you will find it extremely useful and educational. On Saturday, August 10, in conjunction with the Leadership Days event at Materials Park, Ohio, ASM International was honored to recognize the following Chapters for their achievements in the areas of Communications, Innovative Programming, Member Engagement, Student Outreach and Young Professional Engagement: Ontario, Pune, Albuquerque, Chennai, Puget Sound, Cleveland, Gujarat, Detroit, Quad Cities, Los Angeles, and Boston.
