A SM’s Materials Park is never more beautiful than when its iconic geodesic dome serves as a canopy for a summer twilight event for our members. Such was the sight with the Dinner under the Dome during Leadership Days in August. The arching collection of hexagons—and sin- gular pentagon at the apex—gathered us together that night. And it daily serves as a reminder of the strength and gran- deur of our Society—we aremore than the sumof our parts. During the event, I was privileged to connect with Chapter leaders from Kansas City, Finland, Mexico, Western Michigan, and Chicago. For those of us working at ASM Headquarters, it’s inspiring to meet volunteer leaders and hear about their local activities and successes. It was also exciting to meet, in person, members who for years have sent me their chapter news for the ASM News section of this publication. Although I amthe newlyminted editor of AM&P magazine, I have been under the Dome for 23 years. Many members already know me from our work together develop- ing MEI courses and videos (that certainly dates me), planning ther- mal spray events, hosting affil- iate meetings, and editing eNewsletters, ASM News, and EDFA magazine. Prior to ASM, I built up some street cred working on MRS and IEEE pub- lications at a publishing firm. Now, happily settling in to my new post, I am looking ahead at future opportunities to interact with more of the membership. Speaking of which, September’s crisp air signals back to school, leaf-raking time, and the start of our fall conference season. I hope you plan to attend one of the events. I look forward to meeting many of you at MS&T19 in Portland, Heat Treat in Detroit, and ISTFA, also in Portland. I should be able to show you the best coffee shops by my second tour in the “City of Roses.” Also on hand at all three shows will be the issue of AM&P you’re reading now. This September issue is a good example of the range of content we hope to provide you. It spans materials information from the fundamentals—see the article “SEM: An Invaluable Tool in Failure Analysis”—to novel applications, see “NDE of Electrical Generators using Radiographic Inspection.” For our heat treat- ing audience, our HTPro supplement in this issue offers practical tips for “Attract- ing Top Talent to the Heat Treat Industry,” as well as the latest techniques for “Solving Critical Heat Treatment Challenges with Practical Process Modeling.” The ASM Materials Education Foundation is featured prominently in this is- sue not only with their 2018 Annual Report, but also a full-page recap from their 20th celebration of the Eisenman Camp program in our ASM News section. In not too many years, the future members and volunteer leaders of ASMwill rise out of these camps and the Foundation’s scholarship programs. Let us know what you think of the magazine and what content you’d like to see more of in our future pages. I am privileged to serve as your curator as we explore the world of materials together, with the magnificent Dome as our symbolic unifier. joanne.miller@asminternational.org GATHERINGS APLENTY Dinner under the Dome, Leadership Days.
