Lynn Ferguson, FASM, president, DANTE Solutions Inc., Cleve- land, will receive this year’s award “for contributions to the technology and understanding of heat treating and thermal processing sciences, and advancing the use of analytical meth- ods for heat treat process and sub- sequent product improvement.” The award was established in 1960, in memory of a founding member of ASM, and its first and only secretary for 40 years. It recognizes unusual achievements in industry in the practical application of materials science and engineering through production or engineering use. J. Willard Gibbs Phase Equilibria Award Dr. Patrice Turchi, FASM, senior scientist, materials science division, Lawrence Livermore National Labo- ratory, Livermore, Calif., will receive this year’s award “for outstanding and pioneering contributions in the application of first-principles, quan- tum-mechanical calculations to the modeling of phase equilibria and ther- modynamic behavior of alloys.” The award honors J. Willard Gibbs, one of America’s greatest theoretical scientists. In addition to many other contribu- tions, Gibbs laid the thermodynamic foundations of phase equilibria theory with his brilliant essay “On the Equilibrium of Heterogeneous Substances,” published in 1876 and 1878 in the Transactions of the Connecticut Academy. Allan Ray Putnam Service Award Mr. John J. Letcavits, FASM, principal engineer, American Elec- tric Power Service Corp., Columbus, Ohio, will receive this year’s award “for leadership by example, and for over 20 years of dedicated service to ASM International.” Established in 1988, the award recognizes the exemplary efforts of various outstanding mem- bers of ASM International on behalf of the Society to further its objectives and goals. The purpose of this award is to recognize those individuals whose contri- butions have been especially noteworthy and to whom the Society owes a particularly great debt of appreciation. Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award Prof. James F. Shackelford, FASM, professor, University of Califor- nia, Davis, will receive this year’s award “for outstanding contributions tomate- rials education through excellence in classroom instruction, authoring text- books, handbooks and professional monographs, and continuing contri- butions through online instruction.” The award was established in 1960 in memory of an outstanding teacher and research engineer, who was a founding member and president of ASM in 1921. It recognizes unusually long and devoted service in teach- ing, as well as significant accomplishments in materials sci- ence and engineering and an unusual ability to inspire and impart enthusiasm to students. Silver Medal Award Dr. Jeremy E. Schaffer, senior research and development engineer, Fort WayneMetals, Ind., will receive this year’s award “for marked contributions in the medical wire field through alloy design and process-structure-function interplay, for winsome and engaging technical communication and men- torship, and dedicated service to the materials community.” Prof. Cong Wang, director, Met- allurgical Innovation Center of Materi- als, School of Metallurgy, Northeastern University, China, will receive this year’s award “for seminal contributions in high temperature materials process- ing, innovative research at the frontier of oxide metallurgy, exemplary ASM International services, and extraordi- nary potential in materials education and future leadership.” Established in 2010, the honor of Silver Medal of the Society recognizes members who are in mid-career posi- tions (typically 5 to 15 years of experience), for distinguished contributions in the field of materials science and engineer- ing, and the Society. The purpose of this award is to recog- nize leadership at an early stage and encourage individuals to grow, nurture, and further contribute to the growth of the profession, as well as the Society.
