The oil pan was submitted for cold spray repair. Surface preparation consisted of premachining for suitable deposi- tion, cleaning, and grit blasting. An SST Series P cold spray gun (using an UltiLife nozzle with 2-mm orifice) was utilized to manually fill in the repair areas, with the following spray parameters: • • Spray powder: SST A0050 (aluminum-alumina) • • Gas: Nitrogen • • Gas temperature and pressure: 450 ° C, 170 psi (12 bar) The sprayed component was final machined to required dimensional tolerances (Fig. 3). Finally, the vehicle was assem- bled by a professional restoration shop [1] to its original func- tion and appearance (Fig. 4). Adhesion of metal powder to the substrate and depos- ited material is achieved in the solid state. This makes cold spray a unique process, suitable for placing well-bonded, low porosity, oxide-free deposits. These attributes make cold spray a reliable choice for depositing a range of materials over temperature-sensitive substrates in this application. ~iTSSe For more Information: Julio Villafuerte is corporate tech- nology strategist, CenterLine Windsor Ltd., 6290 Morton Industrial Dr., Windsor, ON, N9J 3W3, Canada, 519.734.8464, julio.villafuerte@cntrline.com, www.supersonicspray.com.
