A picture of Albert Einstein hanging in the Met Lab is a good clue that one may be working with a successful person who has the utmost re- spect for a genius. I am extremely fortunate in this regard, as I have had the privilege of working alongside Jegan “Karthi” Karthikeyan, FASM, for over 20 years. He is nowofficially retired after a long and noteworthy career—coming to the U.S. from India, attending Stony Brook University, and landing at a small thermal spray service company in Ohio, ASB Industries. Karthi is famous for proclaiming, “I am a physicist!” He says this with gusto, often while mixing chemicals, engineering coating sys- tems, and designing cold spray equipment. Further, he does not hesitate to speak his mind when it comes to his passion for surface engineering technologies including thermal spray, cold spray, and particle liquid solution spraying. There is a long list of people Karthi pays the highest honors to within the thermal spray industry. Many of these colleagues are involved in ASM’s Thermal Spray Society (TSS), which acts as a springboard for ideas and provides a forum and community for its hardworking members. TSS now reach- es around the globe, providing unique opportunities in many facets of surface engineering. The idea to highlight Karthi came to me while continuing to catalog his accomplishments, including the many inventions, patents, and papers that he worked on during his years at ASB. Also, I continue to be in- spired by his passion and love for his family and their success- es. Karthi is the definition of a soulsuccessful individual. In another setting related to our ASM family, the ASM Ak- ron Chapter includes Deborah Curtis of ASB as secretary of the board since 1998. Ongoing chapter accomplishments include hosting an ASMTeachers Camp for 12 years, holding an annual thermal spray night, coordinating a yearly student gathering, and regular participation in National Engineers Week events. The chapter’s recent thermal spray event featured a presen- tation by David Ellis, FASM, of NASA Glenn Research Center. Chapter leadership includes Lou Cseko, Jr., chair since 2004, along with Dave Houser, Dr. “Bob” Shemenski, FASM, and Gene Homer—all ASM life members. Warmest regards to the Akron Chapter as they celebrate 72 years, 1947-2019. Charles Kay, FASM (Class of 2019) ASB Industries Inc.
