September 29 – October 3 | Oregon Convention Center | Portland ASM EVENTS AT Co-Sponsored by: Mark your calendars for these special events, lectures, and networking opportunities. Planning to travel to Portland to take part in ASM’s annual event held this September at MS&T? ASM’s annual fall gathering of the materials community will be held September 29 – October 3 at the Oregon Convention Center. Following are a few highlights of special interest to ASM members: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 - EDUCATION COURSES METALLOGRAPHY FOR FAILURE ANALYSIS 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Instructor Frauke Hogue, FASM, will present this full-day short course that includes a brief discussion of documentation for failure investigation followed by suggestions for sample preparation techniques specific to failure analysis, such as fracture cleaning and replication, and different etchants for different purposes. The influence of various manufacturing techniques on the microstructure will be discussed and demonstrated including manufacturing and processing imperfections such as cracks, folds, IGA, and decarburization. NET SHAPE FORMING: CONVENTIONAL PROCESSES OR ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING? 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Presented by Howard A. Kuhn, FASM, this full-day short course will aid decisions on the adoption of additive manufacturing (AM) for production of mechanical and thermal load-bearing parts from the perspective of traditional net shape forming. The course will focus on the shape and material flexibilities of AM to develop a design and manufacturing mindset able to capitalize on design for functionality, optimum-shape pro- cessing, leaner manufacturing, and greater sustainability val- ues. Cost comparisons of conventional and AM processes will be given along with supply chain considerations in adoption of AM. DESIGN FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING FOR LIGHTWEIGHTING CERTIFICATE 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Instructor Sunniva Collins, FASM, will present this half- day short course outlining where AM technologies can be applied for design or economic advantage. It will review lightweighting AM technologies, trends, and applications in various transportation industries. Attendees will be able to understand the use of advanced materials databases (e.g., Granta) and the impact of key market drivers on the selection criteria for critical applications in the transportation industry. Additionally, participants will learn about practical uses of AM and advanced materials in manufacturing and how to diag- nose and solve problems using AM. MS&T WOMEN IN MATERIALS SCIENCE RECEPTION 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. Enjoy the chance to network with professionals and peers in a relaxed environment. Organizer:
