MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Chong Joins ABET Board Dianne Chong, FASM, was an- nounced on March 16 by the ABET Board of Delegates as its 2019-2020 president-elect. She will be inaugu- rated during the fall governance meet- ings in November. Chong was vice president of the Boeing Research and Technology organization. Prior, Chong was the vice president of materials, manufacturing, structures and support in the Boeing Engineering, Operations & Technology orga- nization. Chong was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and the Washington State Academy of Science in 2017. She currently serves on the National Academies’ Gordon Prize committee and the steering committee for EngineerGirl. Chong serves on the ABET Board of Directors, where she represents engineering. In this capacity, she leads the Engineering Area Delegation and supports the Engineer- ing Area Commission. Chong was ASM President 2007-2008. ABET accredits college and university technical programs committed to the quality of education they provide. Chong Stetson Stetson Recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Robert F. Stetson, FASM, of San Diego, was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who’s Who. Retired from General Atomic (GA), Stetson has been a continuous ASM member since 1953, joining during his employment in the Babcock and Wilcox steel mill in Beaver Falls, Pa., and continuing through his relocation to San Diego in 1958 and his decade’s long career at GA. He served as San Diego ASM Chapter Chairman 1972-73. Stetson was pre- sented the ASM Engineering Associates Award in 1979 and named an ASM Fellow in 1983. His patented plasma arc welding tip was recognized as an outstanding achievement of 1979 by the James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation. Following retirement, Stetson returned to GA in a consultant role, serving as an adviser at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. At age 90, Stetson continues to enjoy ASM member- ship and keeping up with materials engineering news. Seal’s Team Uses Nanotechnology to Detect Parkinson’s Sudita Seal, FASM, and his team at the University of Central Florida’s (UCF) NanoScience Technology Center have developed the first rapid detec- tor for dopamine, a chemical that is believed to play a role in various dis- eases such as Parkinson’s, depression, and some cancers. Studies show too much dopamine could be associated with some cancers, while low dopa- mine could be associated with Parkinson’s disease and depression. With this new device, a few drops of blood on a palm-sized, rectangular chip is all that is needed. Plasma is separated from the blood within the chip. Cerium oxide nanoparticles, which coat the sensor surface, selectively capture dopamine at microscopic levels from the plasma. Seal is a Pegasus Professor and chair of UCF’s department of materials science and engineering. He is a past ASM Trustee, 2015-2018. Part of the plasmonic sensor research was funded with support from the National Science Foundation and Northrop Grumman’s University Research Program.
