Bergmann Memo- rial Seminar on April 9 at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. This year’s topic of “Enhanced Pro- ductivity through Computational Modeling” featured an opening session by Bill Mahoney, CEO of ASM International, on the importance of bridging materials science andmateri- als data to serve manufacturing needs in the age of Industry 4.0. Other speakers included Greg Olson, FASM, of QuesTek Innovations, David Poweleit of the Steel Founders Society of America, and Fan Zhang of CompuTherm LLC. The event drew more than 50 attendees, from CTOs to mid-career engineers to students. The namesake of the capstone tech- nical seminar is Bob Bergmann, a chapter leader and mate- rials engineering supervisor at Falk Corp. from the 1950s through the 70s. The seminar is designed to bring renowned experts together to educate engineers in materials-related industries in Wisconsin. Pune Hosts Additive Manufacturing Conference The ASM Pune Chapter hosted a two-day International Conference and Exhibition on Additive Manufacturing (AM) at Hotel Orchid in Balewadi, India, February 27-28. The event attracted 120 delegates. The conference began with the traditional lamp lighting ceremony, led by chief guest, Alok Kumar Singh, plant head, Tata Motors Ltd. Jan Dzugan, R&D director, COMTES FHT, Czech Republic, delivered the keynote speech on “Characterization of Additively Manufac- tured Alloys Challenges and Opportunities.” After 16 papers from eminent scholars and technocrats were presented, the final session was a panel discussion and open house. Panel- ists were asked to address the main apprehensions Indian industries have about AM. The session ended with a valedic- tory function chaired by T.S. Sudarshan, FASM. A concurrent exhibition on AM was well attended by delegates and visi- tors. In addition to exhibits of renowned engineering com- panies, two local engineering colleges displayed 3D printers manufactured by students. Carolinas Central Visits Caterpillar The ASM Carolinas Central Chapter toured the Cater- pillar plant in Sanford, N.C., on March 21, to see the fabrica- tion and assembly of skid steer loaders. A college student explains his exhibit to T.S. Sudarshan, FASM. Jones Featured at Cleveland Trustee Night The ASM Cleveland Chapter held its Trustee and Poster Contest Night on March 26. Over 60 attendees came for a talk presented by Roger A. Jones, FASM, CEO emeritus of Solar Atmospheres, on “Vacuum Heat Treating of Additively Manufactured (AM) Components.” AM is rapidly replacing various manufacturing processes as it is being accepted in various machining markets. The presentation reviewed basic AM procedures and the role of vacuum heat treating as a support function of the final product. The talk provided members and students a chance to network and learn more about the AM process. CHAPTERS IN THE NEWS
