I was excited and tentative, waiting for the “real parents” to come and pick him up. Of course they never did, as he was truly mine to care for and nurture. That same year, the ASM Foundation was birthing its own baby, the Eisenman Materials Camp for Stu- dents (under the origi- nal moniker, Materials Camp). Like any par- ent, the Foundation has nurtured the Materials Camp pro- gram to help it grow and find its footing. As with my 20-year-old son, it has been a combination of work and pride to see the program grow and spread its wings across the country. The program’s success is largely the result of the hard work and dedication of many volun- teers at both the national and local chapter levels. In the process, students have come to the Dome from around the country and globe to learn about materials science and failure analysis from professionals who give a week of their time to be with the students. Two mentors, Mike Connelly, FASM, and Frauke Hogue, FASM, have been with the program since its infancy, teaching each of the 20 years. Many others have also mentored students through the years. As proud parents, we are taking this opportunity to look back at our campers through the years and discover where they are now. This year will bring the number of Eisenman campers to over 600, guided by more than 40 dif- ferent individuals throughout the 20 years. During the year, we will be sharing that information, both at the event and through other venues. Everyone who has guided and sup- ported the Materials Camp program can be proud of what has been accomplished and themany students who learned more about materials science and engineering through it. As this year’s Eisenman Materials Camp will be the 20th, the Foundation is planning to celebrate: • • Leaders who started the program • • Mentors who provided guidance • • Students who attended the camps • • Donors who ensure the program’s continuation Those involved with the Eisenman Materials Camp for Students over the last 20 years have had great experiences that have stayed with them throughout the years. Their response to the anniversary has been gratifying and we look forward to sharing their stories with you after our celebra- tion this summer. Those who have memories to share can contact the Foundation staff—we’d love to hear your story! Thank you for your role in the success of the Eisenman Camp. As our baby comes of age, we look forward to cele- brating with you.
