The new modules include heat treating topics and are part of a continuum of learning options within ASM’s physical laboratory/classrooms, online references, and on-site training classes held at other locations. The courses bring a new style of online education to the materials science community. These digitally mastered tutorials offer rich animations and eye-catching graphics. All courses are approximately 1 1/2 hours long with inter- active lesson plans and quizzes throughout to review the knowledge that students gain. All seven classes are derived from ASM’s industry leading “Metallurgy for the Non- Metallurgist” course material. Five modules are now ready to view and two more are being finalized throughout 2019. Heat treating courses include: Heat Treatment of Carbon & Alloy Steels. This self-guided digital course explains the heat treatment processes involved in modulation properties of steel, the effect of carbon on the phases of iron and how it affects the microstructure, classification, and tempering of steel. Case Hardening of Steel. This course highlights various case hardening processes including carburizing, carbonitriding, and nitriding; quenching of case hardened parts; induction hardening; and the different types of furnaces used in commercial heat treating. Strengthening Mechanisms of Nonferrous Alloys. This course describes the effects of alloying elements on the strength of metals, age hardening, cold working, annealing, and the optimal strengthening mechanisms for several groups of alloys. Other courses include: • Mechanical Properties and Their Measurement • Materials Characterization and the Selection Process • Types of Corrosion and Corrosion Prevention • Metallographic Techniques For more information, visit asminternational.org/ learning/courses/online. H T EATING SOCIETY NEWS 4 AUTHORS AND EDITORS NEEDED FOR ASM HANDBOOK UPDATES The ASM Handbook series—recognized as a standard and authoritative reference publication on engineering materials science and technologies—is now published on a new platform, as part of the new ASM Digital Library. Ex- plore this new resource by volume or subject by going to: https://products.asminternational.org/hbk. The Heat Treating Society and the ASM Handbook Committee also welcome your suggestions and contribu- tions of new and revised topics for digital updates of the heat treat content in the ASM Handbook series. ASM Handbooks are of superior quality, such that each publication is one that every member of the Society should be proud of. This means that the publication is developed by recognized authorities in providing practical information and guidance inmaterials engineering, manufacturing, testing, evaluation, analysis, selection, and application. Browse and explore the new digital platform of the ASM Handbook series. If you can volunteer as an author or editor for a heat treating section, or if you have ideas for new digital updates of this important resource, contact Alan Druschitz, chair of the ASM Handbook Committee. handbooks@asminternational.org .
