Shape Memory and Superelastic Technology Conference and Exposition SMST 2019 The Bodensee Forum in Konstanz, Germany The International Conference on Shape Memory and Superelastic Technologies (SMST), a biennial forum for the engineered materials community, will be held at the brand new Bodensee Forum in Konstanz, Germany, the week of May 13-17. The conference is intended to facilitate the spread of knowledge on accepted practices, recent discoveries, and emerging trends in the manufacture and application of shape memory alloys (SMAs) and devices. SMST 2019 will deliver nearly 170 unique speakers presenting in 11 technical tracks. Leading experts in the field will address a wide range of topics across the process-structure- property-performance continuum and delve into applications where SMAs typically shine, including actuation, damping, caloric, and medical devices. In addition to an expanded technical program, SMST 2019 offers an optional one-day workshop for anyone seeking a comprehensive introduction to Nitinol. The popular design challenge, sponsored by the Consortium for the Advancement of Shape Memory Alloy Research and Technology (CASMART), will feature projects by students who have been working in teams on either a medical or space application. This year, many students received funding to travel to SMST for the contest due to the generous support of corporate donors. A new oral poster session was also added this year. The 2019 SMST Founders’ Grant Award, endowed by Tom Duerig, will be presented at the Wednesday morning plenary session. For more information on the Founders’ Grant, see page 62 in this issue. SMST attendees will have the opportunity to meet with nearly two dozen companies active in the shape memory market. The exposition opens during a reception held the first evening and remains open throughout the next day.
