HIGHL IGHTS A D V A N C E D M A T E R I A L S & P R O C E S S E S | F E B R U A R Y / M A R C H 2 0 1 9 7 6 Erdemir and Misra Named AAAS Fellows Ali Erdemir, FASM, and Amit Misra, FASM, were elected to the 2018 Class of Fellows of the American Associa- tion for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). They were officially recognized during the Fellows Forum at the AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington in Feb- ruary. Erdemir, an Argonne National Laboratory Distinguished Fellow, was recognized for his “distinguished con- tributions to the fields of materials science, surface engineering and tri- bology and other related disciplines including friction, wear and lubrica- tion.” He holds 15 patents and has won six R&D 100 awards. Misra is chair and professor of materials science and engineering, and mechanical engineer- ing, at the University of Michigan. He is cited for contributions to the development of nanolayered composite materials, mentoring of early-career scientists, and academic and professional leadership. Rosei Honored by APS Federico Rosei, FASM, professor at the National Institute of Scientific Research inVarennes, Canada, received the 2019 JohnWheatley Award fromthe American Physical Society (APS) for his efforts and achievements in education and research in developing countries. He has organized over 20 conferences in more than a dozen developing coun- tries to foster scientific dialogue and international networking. Since 2014, Rosei has held the UNESCO Chair in Materials and Technologies for Energy Conversion, Saving and Storage. He supervises doctoral students from developing countries and has initiated joint projects involving 30 organizations in 15 countries. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Rosei IN MEMORIAM William F. Hosford, FASM, passed away on December 28, 2018. A native of Maplewood, N.J., Prof. Hosford received his B.S. from Lehigh University in 1950, M.E. from Yale University in 1951, and Sc.D. from theMassachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1959. Hewas a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps for two years before joining the MIT faculty as an instructor in 1957 and later being promoted to assistant professor. In 1963, Hosford became an associate professor at the University of Michigan (UM) and within five years was promoted to professor. He became professor emeritus at UM in 2004. An inspiring teacher and researcher, Hosford published over 75 technical articles and two textbooks during his career. In 1998, Hosford received ASM’s Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award for his long and devoted service to teaching and to the field of materials science and engineering. Maurice “Mo” E. VandenBergh, 68, of Avon, Ind., passed away on December 24, 2018. He was born in Pana, Ill. VandenBergh was in sales for Praxair/Miller for 19 years. In 2003, he founded and was president of VandenBergh & Associates Inc., a ceramic engineering consulting and repair company. At the time of his death, he was serving a three-year term on the board of directors of ASM’s Thermal Spray Society (TSS). He also served over a decade on the TSS Train- ing Committee. VandenBergh held a B.S. in ceramic engineering from the University of Missouri, Rolla, and took business courses at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. In addition to being active in TSS and the ASM Indianapolis Chapter, he was a member of the American Ceramic Soci- ety and the American Welding Society. Erdemir Misra
