Boston University Hosts Joint Chapter Camp Volunteers from four of the ASM International New England Chapters welcomed 55 high school students to Boston University (BU) on May 21 to introduce them to the wonderful world of engineering and materials science, in particular. Referred to as the 2018 ASMMaterials Experience New England, the event was a partnership between BU’s division of materials science and engineering and the local ASM Chapters. Attendees participated in learning modules led by industry volunteers and graduate students on topics such as cryogenic phenomena, shape memory alloys, and polymers and 3D printing. This popular partnership event has been a success since 2012. Pittsburgh September Meeting Takes Off The ASM Pittsburgh Chapter hosted a well-attended joint dinner meeting on September 20 at the Pittsburgh Ger- man Club with members from ASM, the American Welding Society, and the American Foundry Society. Michelle Fitz- gerald, a NASA Operation Support Officer, was the featured speaker and presented “Maintenance Aboard the Interna- tional Space Station” (ISS). She recounted how her team and the astronauts devised ingenious repairs to problems on the ISS. Fixes included unusual combinations of existing tools and common items. Some of her team’s fixes are still in operation today. The meeting was Spouse Night and several members also brought their older children to hear Fitzger- ald’s talk. Pune Welcomes President Schmidt A group of 92 students and faculty gathered to hear ASM President Frederick Schmidt speak at Sinhgad College of Engineering in Vadgaon, India. Schmidt’s topic was fail- ure analysis. He discussed the responsibility materials engi- neers have to foster safety in the society. He also emphasized the value of the ASM network in career building. Thirty-two new students expressed interest in membership that day. Each was presented with a rose, which is a tradition in India. The event was hosted by the ASM Pune Chapter. A unique tool was assembled from a spare toothbrush and other standard tools aboard the ISS. It was used to clean and lubricate the jaws on the mechanical arm used to catch satellites and provide a platform for astronauts on extravehicular activities.
