During the visit, Basu’s students, AkshayRao, Snigdha Ghosh, and Dilpreet Dhanjal presented their research results onmetal refining, thermodynamics, slag-metal interactions, and continuous casting. The meeting provided attendees with a unique opportunity for international communica- tion. Further cooperation between the two groups was also discussed. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS Sisson Doubly Honored as Fellow Richard D. Sisson, FASM, the George F. Fuller Professor of Mechan- ical Engineering and director of the Manufacturing and Materials Science and Engineering programs at Worces- ter Polytechnic Institute (WPI), has been named a fellow of two mate- rials science professional societies, the International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (IFHTSE), and the American Ceramic Society (ACerS). Sisson, who directs the Center for Heat Treating Excellence (CHTE), part of WPI’s Metal Processing Institute, received the IFHTSE fellowship at the 4th International Conference on HTSE in Automotive Applications in Spartanburg, S.C., in June. Sis- son was honored “for his recognized leadership at the CHTE and his continued passion for educating the next generation of heat treating engineers and researchers.” The new ACerS fellows will be honored at the society’s Annual Honor and Awards Banquet on October 15 in Columbus, Ohio, which will be held in conjunction with MS&T18. Gayle Named SME Fellow Frank W. Gayle, FASM, was elec- ted to the 2018 SME College of Fellows. He is the deputy director of the Office of Advanced Manufacturing at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Gayle’s past roles at NIST include serving as division chief of the NIST Metallurgy Division. He has also led the team of technical experts on the forensics of structural steel in the Congressionally-mandated NIST investigation of the World Trade Center disaster on Sept. 11, 2001. Prior to joining NIST, he spent 11 years in the aerospace industry. He earned his doctorate in materials science from the Mas- sachusetts Institute of Technology and degrees in civil and mechanical engineering from Duke University. Sheckel Interns at ThermoFusion John Sheckel, a materials engineering student at San Jose State University, joined ThermoFusion for a three- month practicum of heat treating and brazing. As an intern, he will learn and practice materials testing (pre and post heat treat), incoming and outgoing inspection, furnace cali- bration, and operational adherence to AMS 2759/D. Sheckel is amember of theMaterial Advantage Chapter at his school. ThermoFusion began their Internship Program in 2011 to provide practical experience for engineers to better under- stand theoretical lessons in heat treating and brazing. Sheckel is the seventh intern to be hired into the internship program at ThermoFusion. Hilmas to Chair MSE at Missouri S&T Gregory E. Hilmas was recently named chair of materials science and engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology. The Curators’ Distinguished Professor of ceramic engineering has served as interim department chair at Missouri S&T since July 2017 and been a faculty member for 20 years. Hilmas received a 2002 R&D award along with colleagues from the University of Michigan and Advanced Ceramics Research Inc. He received his bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1986, master’s degree in ceramic engineering from The Ohio State University in 1989, and Ph.D. in materials science and engi- neering from the University of Michigan in 1993. Vander Voort Teaches in Peru Hilmas George Vander Voort, FASM, traveled to Lima in August to present lectures and a seminar at the IV International Conference on Welding and Joining of Materials organized by engineers at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Topics included the measurement of grain size, welding metallography, and failure analysis.
