The ASM Peoria Chapter participated in a local event in August— Ignite Peoria—which showcased local makers, musicians, artists, innovators, dancers, and actors, in a STEAM-inspired, interactive day of fun and learning. During the event, Lindsey and Dan Cavanaugh, both Caterpillar employees, demonstratedmetal casting of tin into dinosaur shapes. different material grades, shapes, and sizes, each requiring its own way of preparation. I begin by considering materials with the same or similar characteristics. If a sample has sim- ilar characteristics to another material I’ve prepared before, then their processes may also be similar. This method, including different troubleshooting techniques and my past experience preparing various samples, gives me insight into finding a solution. What is your engineering background? I have a bachelor’s of science in materials science and engineering from the University of California, Davis. I was hired by Allied High Tech shortly after I graduated. From there I gained a tremendous amount of experience in the field of metallurgy and materials science. I have worked with a wide variety of materials, including metals, ceramics, semiconductors, glass, and PCBs. I have prepared them in a variety of ways including for transmission electron micros- copy, electron backscatter diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and optical analyses. What are you working on now? I am currently preparing unencapsulated magnesium alloy samples using Allied’s MultiPrep precision grinder/ polisher. At the same time, I am testing a new consum- able product, and working on my upcoming presentation for MS&T in October titled “Metallographic Preparation of Coatings.” Hobbies? Aerial acrobatics and playing games with friends. Last book read? “A Princess of Mars” by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Do you know someone who should be featured in an upcoming Women in Engineering profile? Twelve teachers from across the country, plus one from Canada and three Temple students, spent a week at Temple University’s Ambler campus learning the basics of materials science technology as taught at the high school level. Solar Atmospheres gave a brief overview of vacuum heat treating furnaces, processes, and metallurgy, followed by a tour of the facility. ASM Ignites Peoria Solar Atmospheres Inc. recently hosted an ASM Inter- national Teachers Camp at its facility in Souderton, Pa. The camp was sponsored by the ASM Philadelphia Liberty Bell Students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, paid a visit to the Material Advantage (MA) North- eastern University Chapter in China, July 21-30.
