Sowell NOMINATION DEADLINES ASM Nominating Committee Nominations Due ASM International is seeking members to serve on the 2019 ASM Nominating Committee. The committee will select a nominee for 2019-2020 vice president (who will serve as president in 2020-2021) and three nominees for trustee. Candidates for this committee can only be pro- posed by a Chapter through its executive committee, an ASM committee or council, or an affiliate society board. Nominations are due December 15. Nomination Deadline for the 2019 Class of Fellows is Fast Approaching The honor of Fellow of the Society was established to provide recognition to ASM members for distinguished con- tributions in the field of materials science and engineering, and to develop a broadly based forum for technical and pro- fessional leaders to serve as advisors to the Society. Criteria for the ASM Fellow award include: • • Outstanding accomplishments in materials science or engineering • • Broad and productive achievement in production, manufacturing, management, design, development, research, or education • • Five years of current, continuous ASM membership Analice Sowell Named 2018 Kishor M. Kulkarni Distinguished High School Teacher The Teacher Award Committee of the ASM Materials Education Founda- tion is proud to announce the selec- tion of Analice Sowell of the Memphis University Schools, Tenn., as recipient of the 2018 Kishor M. Kulkarni Distin- guished High School Teacher Award. The award, $2000 plus $500 toward travel to MS&T, was estab- lished in 2007 through a generous donation by Dr. Kishor M. Kulkarni, past trustee of ASM International, and his family to recognize the accomplishments of one high school sci- ence teacher who demonstrates a significant and sustained impact on pre-college age students. The award will be pre- sented on October 15 at the ASM Leadership Awards Lun- cheon at MS&T18 in Columbus, Ohio. Having joined the Memphis University School staff in 2007, Sowell has chaired the school’s science department since 2013. While chair, her department has added courses, including Honors Accelerated Materials Science. She also has formulated curricular pathways to success to guide stu- dents interested in careers in science and engineering. “Mrs. Sowell excels as a teacher and is an amazing leader. I wanted to start a club based on engineering and she helped make it a reality. Today our Engineering Competition Club is a huge success. She always inspires me to become a better person and work just a little bit harder.” J. Alexander Wolf, graduate, Memphis University School; student, University of Southern California 2018 Undergraduate Design Competition Winners Announced The ASM Materials Education Foundation and Design Competition Committee are pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 Undergraduate Design Competition. First prize goes to Michigan Technological University for “Design of an Al-Ce-X Alloy for Lightweight, High Tempera- ture Automotive Applications.” Team members include Aaron Cook, Joshua Dorn, Mark Ilenich, Philip Staublin, and advisors Paul Sanders and Thomas Wood. The team will receive $2000, $500 travel assistance for MS&T18, and $500 to the department to support future design teams. Second prize goes to the University of Florida for “AlFeSi-based Intermetallic Compounds for High Tempera- ture Applications.” Team members include Matthew Cohen, Camille Hernandez, Christopher Orozco, faculty advisors Richard Hennig and Michele Manuel, and graduate student advisors Sujeily Soto-Median, Biswas Rijal, and Lilong Zhu. The team will receive $1500 and $500 travel assistance for MS&T18. Third prize goes to Northwestern University for “Design of High zT Thermoeletric Material.” Team members include Yvonne Chart, Jason Dong, Ryan Franks, Alexan- der Furlong, Binghao (Evan) Guo, faculty advisors Gregory Olson, FASM, and James Rondinelli, and graduate student adviser Matthew Peters. The team will receive $1000 and $500 travel assistance for MS&T18. Winners will be recog- nized on October 15 at the ASM Leadership Awards Lun- cheon at MS&T18 in Columbus, Ohio.
