Zhu was a senior materials engineer at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland and lived in Westlake, Ohio. He was born on December 2, 1962. He received a B.S. in mechanical engineering and M.S. in materials science and engineering from the Hefei University of Technology in China and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He served as a director on the ASM Thermal Spray Society Board 2010-2016 and was on the organizing committee of the International Thermal Spray Conference for many years. He also served as an author, reviewer, and guest editor of the ASM/TSS Journal of Thermal Spray Technology. In 2007, he earned an R&D 100 Award for thermal environmental barrier coatings and NASA awarded him the Exceptional Technology Achievement Medal (2009) and the Exceptional Space Act Award (2011). Zhu was named an ASM Fellow in 2014 “for technical achievements in the design and characterization of novel and advanced materials for gas turbine engine components, specifically in the areas of ther- mal and environmental barrier coatings.” John Storm passed away on May 13 at age 63. Storm studied metallurgical engineering at Purdue University, graduating in 1977 with a BSMetE degree. After a co-op with U.S. Steel in Gary, Ind., he started his career at the Detroit Diesel Allison (DDA) Division of General Motors, where he helped pioneer work with dual frequency induction hardening to strengthen gears and shafts. In 1986, he cofounded Contour Hardening Inc. (CHI) with the goal of supplying the industry with innovative induction hardening systems. CHI grew to be a worldwide supplier of equipment and heat treat services. In 2003, he formed the Real Power Division of CHI, which manufactures chassis-integrated electric generator systems for trucks. In 1998, he developed ultra-lightweight transmission gears heat-treated using CHI’s Micropulse technology. The CHI gearbox contributed to Arie Luyendyk’s 1997 Indianapolis 500 win, and Scott Goodyear’s sec- ond place finish in that same race. Stormmost recently served as president and CEO of CHI. He was awarded over 200 U.S. and international patents. In 2004, he received the Distinguished Engineering Alumni award from Purdue’s materials engineering department. Alicia Gaydos, 52, died suddenly on February 13. She was the current chair of the ASM Philadelphia Chapter. She attended ASM’s Leadership Days in 2017 and participated in the attendee certificate awards at Temple Univeristy’s Materials Camp last August. Gaydos received a four-year scholarship to Lehigh University, graduating with a B.S. in metallurgy and materials sci-ence in 1987. Her career path included working at Airco Industrial Gases as an applications engineer, Amax Specialty Copper Corp. as a metallurgical engineer, Revere Copper Products as a metallurgical supervisor, and Ansonia Copper and Brass as technical products manager. Gay-dos was also an accomplished sculptor and worked as a freelance designer for six years. She was most recently employed by Avalon Flooring in Warrington, Pa., as a sales staff/designer. Gordon Davidson Duff, 60, passed away on April 15. He was born in Hartford, Connecti- cut, and lived most of his life in Simsbury. He was an alumnus of Tilton Academy in New Hamp- shire and Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Duff was a manufacturing sales representative for his family business, William K. Duff Co. He received a silver certificate from ASM International recognizing his 25 years of continuous membership. Duff was a founding member of the ASM Heat Treating Society and member of the ASM Hartford Chapter. Gaydos Storm Duff Zhu IN MEMORIAM
