CEO CORNER Granta Update One aspect of the ASM Renewal we have not com- mented on previously in this column is our growing rela- tionship with Granta Design Ltd. Many of you know that ASM became a minority stakeholder in Granta in 2002, and shortly thereafter our Materials Information Online (MIO) offering was built around the first generation of Granta’s materials data management technology. The organiza- tions also collaborated to build the ASM Medical Materials Database. With the exception of that initial activity burst, progress between the companies had been slow and far less strategic. After ASM CIO Ron Aderhold and I completed strategic assessments with Granta in mid-2017, we proposed a four- phase renewed relationship, with projects spread through- out the 2017-2020 timeframe. Happily, Granta accepted the proposal and collaboration between the companies has dra- matically accelerated. In 2017, ASM IT resources updated Java source code in the MIO implementation and upgraded the platform to v.10 of the GRANTA MI materials information management system. This project was the first time ASM had the skillsets in-house to execute such a project. Earlier this year, ASM deployed a cloud-based version of GRANTA MI, which will be used to support the ASM Mate- rials Solutions Network. Recently, Granta signed on as a Seeking Nominations for Thermal Spray Hall of Fame The Thermal Spray Hall of Fame, established in 1993 by the Thermal Spray Society of ASM International, recog- nizes and honors outstanding leaders who have made sig- nificant contributions to the science, technology, practice, education, management, and advancement of thermal spray. I would like to share with you the resurgence happening within the ASM Materials Education Foundation. Just as the ASM Inter- national Renewal is taking place, the Foundation, too, is enjoying an excit- ing time. We’d love for you to join us in shaping the future. Wilson Provider Member in our network. By mid-year, ASM will be upgrading its MIO software to v.11. This version uses the newGRANTA MI:Explore tool that will provide a faster, easier to use interface to ASM content, a result many of our mem- bers have anticipated for some time. Strategic proposals for 2019 and 2020 are now in dis- cussion. One initiative involves ASM selling Granta software into market segments adjacent to Granta’s base. Another idea proposes joint development of a federated seman- tic search capability that could operate in both ASM and GRANTA MI databases. These exciting collaborations should mean improved capabilities and value generation for our respective clients and organizations during the ASM Renewal and beyond. William T.
