The lecture was established in 1971 and is jointly sponsored by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) and ASM International. The topic of the lecture shall fall within these objectives: • • To clarify the role of materials science and engineering in technology and in society in its broadest sense. • • To present an evaluation of progress made in devel- oping new technology for the ever changing needs of technology and society. • • To define new frontiers for materials science and engi- neering. Qualifications of the lecturer include: • • A person experienced in national or industrial policy- making in the field of materials science and engineering. • • An eminent individual who has an overview of tech- nology and society in which technology and society are affected by development in materials science and engineering. • • A person associated with government, industry, re- search, or education. Nominations may be proposed by any member of either Society. Submit your nominations by September 1 for consideration. Recommendations should be submitted to the headquarters of either Society. Lawrence A. Somrack Nominee for Trustee Lawrence A. Somrack is president of NSL Analytical Services Inc. in War- rensville Heights, Ohio. Since joining the company in 1993, he has been at the forefront of testing method devel- opment for the aerospace, ceramic, and medical industries. In 1999, he became NSL’s majority shareholder and president. Somrack developed a strategic plan and implemented programs to grow as a premier chemistry testing laboratory. His goal was to improve the performance of materials and processes through quality analysis. He is currently working with test method development for additively manufactur- ing products using 3D printing with metal powders. Hehas been influential inbringing substantial improve- ments and additional testing with ASTM, EU, and NIST/ Brammer (Standard Reference Materials). This demanding research is currently at the cutting edge of technology. As a child, Somrack was excited to accompany his father to ASM’s headquarters to observe construction of the Dome. This was the beginning of his lifelong connection with ASM International. In 1994, Somrack joined the ASM Cleveland Chapter and as a committee co-chair was instru- mental in developing a popular four-day training program showcasing various testing methods. Somrack is an ASM sustainingmember (since 2005) and active in local chapter meetings. He was a former co-chair of the Education Committee and has served as an industry judge for every DomesDay competition. Somrack has pub- lished numerous articles and presented papers at various ASM chapter meetings. He has received multiple awards for leadership and growth initiatives, as well as the Cleveland Chapter’s Distinguished Service Award in 2016. Somrack received his bachelor’s in marketing from Myers University (now Dyke College) in Cleveland and his MBA from Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. Somrack ASM Nominations The ASM International Constitution provides that members of the Society may submit additional nominations after the Nominating Committee has made its official report. Article V, Section 6 of the ASM Constitution reads: “After publica- tion of the Nominating Committee’s report on nominees, and the Board report on its nominee for Treasurer, and at any time prior to July 15 of the same year, additional nominations for any or all of the vacancies may be made in writing to the Secretary at Headquarters. Such nominations must be signed by at least five individuals or Chapter Sustaining Mem- bers, each from any combination of at least 10 Chapters and/or ASM Committees. Such nominees shall be processed by the Secretary for compliance with Section 4 of this Article. This shall be the only way in which additional nominations may be made. The membership of ASM International shall be duly notified of such additional nominations.”
