Over the years, thermal spray has expanded to become a technique that is used to produce coatings that can do more than provide passive protection against surface deg- radation processes such as corrosion, wear, and ultra-high temperature. Novel thermal-sprayed coatings have been applied to create bacte- ricidal surfaces, super-hydrophobic anti-icing layers, heating elements for renewable energy technologies, and in additive manufacturing using cold-gas dynamic spraying. These new coatings and unique applications have been the result of careful and painstaking research and development by many people in academia, government, and industry. The Journal of Thermal Spray Technology (JTST) continues to be a leader in disseminating these novel research findings to the thermal spray community and the broader materials science and engi- neering disciplines. Our hope is that readers of the iTSSe news- letter are also reading the in-depth, groundbreaking research articles included in JTST to keep up with the current state of the art. JTST will continue publishing contributions on all as- pects, both theoretical and practical, of thermal spray tech- nology, including processes, feedstock manufacture, testing, and characterization. As the primary vehicle for thermal spray information transfer, the mission of JTST is to promote syn- ergies between the rapidly advancing thermal spray industry and end-user industries. We endeavor to publish critically re- viewed scientific and engineering papers, which combine the best of new research with the latest industrial applications. JTST also provides worldwide coverage of the latest research, products, equipment, and process developments. Recently, JTST has facilitated the flow of information that it publishes by updating the layout of peer-reviewed re- search and review articles to a fresh and contemporary format. While most read- ers will gravitate toward peer-reviewed research articles because of the depth and substance of information they pro- vide, others like to read papers that pro- vide a review or perspective regarding new trends in the thermal spray field and market. In recognition of this latter need, JTST has launched a new initiative where expert researchers and practitioners are invited to submit reviews and seminal perspective papers on the current state of research in select topical areas on thermal and cold spray techniques, future trends, opportunities for ad- vancement, and barriers to market penetration. The thermal spray field and JTST have grown tremen- dously over the past fewyears. The journal has had strong sup- port from the community, as evidenced by subscriptions and submissions of manuscripts to our regular and special issues on topics of interest to the thermal spray field. Editors and members of our editorial board look forward toworking close- ly with the thermal spray community and the many sectors that use this technology in advancing and growing the field. Students must be a registered undergraduate or graduate during the 2018-2019 academic year andmust be studying or involved in research in an area closely related to the field of thermal spray technolo- gy. Nominations are due April 1. For more information on eli- gibility and the benefits of being a student boardmember, visit tss.asminternational.org . SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR THERMAL SPRAY HALL OF FAME The Thermal Spray Hall of Fame, established in 1993 by the ASM Thermal Spray Society, recognizes and honors out- standing leaders who have made significant contributions to the science, technology, practice, education, management, and advancement of thermal spray. Nominations are due September 30.
