From Burlington, Mass., Abkowitz was a member of the ASM Boston Chapter and a Life Member of ASM. He earned a B.S. from MIT in 1948. Best known for advances in titanium technology, his most notable inven- tion was the alloy Ti-6Al-4V used extensively in the aerospace and biomedical industries. In 2000, he received the first Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Titanium Association. Abkowitz founded Dynamet Technology Inc. in 1972 and saw his business grow during the next few decades. The company was acquired by RTI International in 2014 and merged with Alcoa in 2015. Until early 2017, he served as senior technical fellow at Alcoa. In 2015, Abkowitz was recognized by the Boston Patent Law Association as the recipient of its inaugural Jesse Erlich Achievement Award in recognition of his influence as a local inventor with over 20 patents. The Boston Chapter plans to launch a Stanley Abkowitz Memorial Lecture on Titanium and establish a scholarship in his name. Nicholas G. Balog, of Port Orange, Fla., passed away on April 3, 2017, at age 85. He was born in Peckville, Pa., the 10th of 13 children. Balog moved to Bridgeport, Conn., in 1950 and worked in the steel industry until he retired from Carpenter Technology in 1989.
