Glasgow, FASM, re- tired manager of the Microgravity Materials Science Branch, NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, was named the 2017 George A. Roberts Award winner. His citation reads, “for a life-long commitment and contin- ued service to materials education for students, teachers and materials professionals, through the K-12 teacher Grant program, the Materials Camp program, and development and instruction of MEI courses.” Glasgow attended the Case Institute of Technology, earning his B.S. in metallurgy in 1968 and his M.S. in 1974. Entering NASA in 1968, his work there led to the identifi- cation of a new alloy for hydrogen-oxygen engines such as those used on the Space Shuttle. The group he led for over 10 years was known for the development of young peo- ple—from high school students and co-op college students through to post docs. Now in retirement from NASA, he remains busy teach- ing ASM International professional development classes. He also helps with the ASM Teachers Camp program by instructing and providing crystal models and other equip- ment for the master teachers. Glasgow has served on numerous ASM International committees as member and chair, generally those involved with student outreach. He initiated, with the support of several chapters, the ASM International Teacher Grant pro- gram, now part of ASM Education Foundation activities. The award recognizes outstanding support of educa- tional outreach and honors an individual who has made a significant impact on our ability to reach students and teachers, in efforts to increase awareness of materials and applied science careers. Glasgow will receive his award at the ASM Awards Dinner on Tuesday, October 10, at the ASM Annual Event in Pittsburgh. ASM Materials Education Foundation Announces 2017 Pacesetter Award Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow (LIFT) was selected to receive the 2017 ASM Foundation Pacesetter Award. The award is in recognition of the impact LIFT and their employee associates have in supporting educational outreach efforts to encourage young people to pursue careers in materials science and engineering. Providing professional development opportunities for teachers and encouraging students of all ages to study materials sciences and consider advanced manufacturing as a career choice are at the core of LIFT’s education and workforce development efforts. LIFT is a Detroit-based pub- lic-private partnership with three missions – to enable lightweight- ing solutions through applied research and development; to transition those new technologies into the marketplace; and to develop an educated and skilled American work- force, confident in using those new lightweighting technol- ogies and processes. Since its founding in 2014, LIFT has invested in over 40 education and workforce initiatives across the country, linking existing local resources to ensure those initiatives also can be replicated in other regions. The ASM Foundation Materials Camp for Teachers was one of LIFT’s first educa- tion and workforce development investments. LIFT associates will be presented the award at the ASM Leadership Luncheon on Monday, October 9, at the ASM Annual Event in Pittsburgh. Canada Council Awards ASM Canada Council will present awards during ASM’s Leadership Awards Luncheon on Monday October 9, in Pittsburgh, during MS&T 17.
