HIGHL IGHTS A D V A N C E D M A T E R I A L S & P R O C E S S E S | O C T O B E R 2 0 1 7 3 8 John Mortimer University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee “Materials science and engineer- ing is more than just a career choice, it is an expanded outlook on the world around us.” Ever since switching from mechanical engineering to materials science and engineering, Mortimer has found a new passion for the sciences and innovation. His enthusiasm and commitment to these ideas is reflected in his lithium ion battery research and investment casting internship, showing the diversity of his engineering path. His desire to learn may lead to graduate school. Roman Palvanov University of Wisconsin-Madison Palvanov is entering his third year of materials science and engineering after studying a year abroad at Kyushu University in Japan. He spent two semesters taking engineering courses at the Japanese research university and gained a unique perspective on the field. Palvanov is pursuing a double major in statistics and materials science. He realizes the importance of data anal- ysis in engineering applications and hopes to be a stronger materials scientist with a background in both areas. Outstanding Scholar Awards The Outstanding Scholar Awards were established to recognize students who demonstrate exemplary academic and personal achievements, as well as interest and poten- tial in metallurgy or materials science and engineering. The awards are funded by the ASM Materials Education Founda- tion. Three $2000 awards are presented each year. Jonathan Geiser University of Akron Geiser studies corrosion engineer- ing at the University of Akron. Living in Northeastern Ohio, he notices all the rust on the cars and bridges. Research- ing why rust happens led to the field of corrosion engineering. During a co-op with Ohio Gratings, Geiser worked to develop a pretreatment system for powder coating alumi- num parts to help mitigate the effect of corrosion. Upon graduating, he looks for the opportunity to start his own consulting firm to provide real solutions for real-world problems. Linsey Grzeschik University of Akron As a research assistant at the Uni- versity of Akron (UA), Grzeschik works on modelling galvanic corrosion in 9310 and Monel, which gives her an advantage in designing experiments, analyzing data, and programming models. She has been the president of EUREKA (Honors College engineering club), president of the Corrosion Squad (a NACE chapter for UA), and secretary of the Engineering Student Council. “I hope to pursue a career as a corrosion engineer in an oil refinery or chemical processing plant.” Wesley Kendall Rutgers University Kendall was drawn to materi- als science and engineering due to its interdisciplinary work and fundamen- tal importance to many other fields. He quickly grew an interest in optical and photonic materials, and began con- ducting research in a fiber optics lab at Rutgers. He has used his position as president of the Rutgers chapter of Material Advantage to inspire others to advance the field. Kendall is hoping to pursue a Ph.D. in materials science, continuing his research in photonic materials. Edward J. Dulis Scholarship The Edward J. Dulis Scholarship was established in 2003 and is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate member of ASM at the junior or senior level who demon- strates exemplary academic and personal achievements, as well as interest and potential in metallurgy or materials sci- ence and engineering. One scholar will receive a certificate and check for $1500 toward educational expenses for one academic year. Kevin Nelson University of Akron Ever since he first learned of the severity of corrosion in the world, Nelson has been determined to be part of the solution. His involvement with ASM International started while in high school and led to him founding the UA chapter of Material Advantage. His four co-op semesters with Colonial Pipeline have fueled his goal to work the pipeline industry. To better suit a project man- aging role in the future, Nelson will pursue an MBA. 2017 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
