WilliamPark Woodside founded our Society as the Steel Treaters Club more than 100 years ago and later served as president of ASM. The scholar- ship was established to support an ASM student member studying materials science and engineering at the junior or senior level who demonstrates strength in leadership, char- acter, and academics. Tuition of up to $10,000 for one aca- demic year and a certificate of recognition are awarded to the recipient. Robert Seivert South Dakota School of Mines & Technology Always fascinated with math and science, Seivert found his calling in engineering through his high school robotics team. “From the first day of robotics, I knew engineering was the career for me.” Undecided on which engineering discipline to enter, a tour of the metallurgical engineering department at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T) made up his mind. Seivert has completed two internships with a leading steel manufacturer and is vice president of SDSM&T’s Material Advantage chapter. The Lucille and Charles A. Wert Scholarship The Lucille and Charles A. Wert Scholarship was estab- lished in 2006 through a generous bequest by the couple. It serves as an expression of their commitment to educa- tion and the materials science and engineering community. Tuition of up to $10,000 for the academic year is awarded through this scholarship. 36 Scholarship Winners 40 MD Corner 41 Canada Council Awards 42 Women in Engineering 44 Members in the News ASM MATERIALS EDUCATION FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2017 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Samantha Schloder University of Pittsburgh Schloder will be a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh, where she will be studying materials science and engineering. She was inspired to pursue a degree in engineering by her mother, a University of Pittsburgh graduate in chemical engineering, who first introduced her to the world of mathematics and science. Schloder was chosen to participate in the Gover- nor School for Engineering and Technology at Lehigh Uni- versity and completed an internship at Product Assurance Service Inc. George A. Roberts Scholarships The George A. Roberts Scholarships were established in 1995 through a generous contribution from Dr. George A. Roberts, FASM, past president and retired CEO of Teledyne, to the ASM Foundation as an expression of his commitment to education and the materials science and engineering community. Scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate members of ASM at the junior or senior level who demonstrate exemplary academic and personal achievements, and interest and potential in metallurgy or materials science and engineering. Five scholars will receive a certificate and check for $6000 toward educational expenses for one academic year.
