CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE Logo from first Class of Fellows in 1970. I t is always exciting to see who is included among the new Class of ASM Fellows each year. As ASM staff, it’s thrilling for us to see members we have worked with get recog- nized for their achievements. In looking back at its origins, we are reminded that the ASM Fellow designation is consid- ered much more than an award: It is an honor. Established in 1969, the honor of being named a Fellow, according to the rules, “develops a broadly based forum for technical and professional leaders to serve as advisors to the Society.” And so we look forward to the advice and counsel of the newest Class of Fellows listed in the ASM News section of this issue. We also welcome their continued active involvement and leadership as speakers and authors, committee members, and participants in discussion fo- rums on ASM Connect—all for the betterment of the Society. And we can’t wait to celebrate with them in person next year. Plans are underway for a grand event in 2022 to honor three years of ASM Awardees and Fellows! Also receiving accolades is Georgetown University for some timely research described in our Materials Science and Coronavirus Series article in this issue. They were the only univer- sity team named among the Top 10 winners of the first phase of a Mask Innovation Challenge conducted by the National Institute for Occupa- tional Safety and Health. ASM member Prof. Kai Liu said the Georgetown design is “a new type of air filtration material based on lightweight nanoporous metal foams that are efficient, breathable, robust, adaptable, cost-effective, and can also be cleaned, reused, and recycled.” That’s a win all around. Standing in good company, we proudly announce AM&P’ s own recent rec- ognition. On page 5, learn how the Monel: Part II article we published last year earned a Bronze Award for Technical Article in an international trade publication contest. The judges commented, “Scholarly—and yet utterly gorgeous and fasci- nating. Well done!” It is our hope that you, our readers, find something captivat- ing and thought-provoking in every issue of our award-winning magazine. In fact, this issue of AM&P will be headed to St. Louis for IMAT and Heat Treat in September. If you will be there too, not only will you enjoy engaging keynotes and technical programming, you’ll also be in-the-know early about the winners of two annual competitions: The DomesDay student competition, testing the strength of miniature geodesic structures; and the International Metallographic Contest, showcasing the finest microstructural images in our industry. And finally, in this issue’s ASM News section, we highlight this year’s Chapter awards. The ASM Chapter Council bestowed accolades on a number of Chapters for various aspects of membership management from recruitment to program- ming, and from communication to student outreach. Check out the story to see if your Chapter received laurels. We congratulate all of the award-winning Chapters and the new Class of Fellows. The Chapters are truly the lifeblood of our Society and our Fellows are its ambassadors. ASM is certainly powered by excellence. As staff, it is our great honor to work alongside you. joanne.miller@asminternational.org
