This short course provides an overview of different corrosion prevention techniques and has been designed for those with no previous training in this topic. It explains the general considerations in corrosion control design, mate- rials selection, how coatings and inhibitors prevent corro- sion, and describes cathodic and anodic protection mecha- nisms. Students move at their own pace in this self-guided digital course aided by helpful visuals, narrated anima- tions, real-world examples, and interactive quizzes. ASM President Diana Essock (right) and trustee Larry Somrack (left) were in attendance, as well as the entire ASM staff, to honor Taylor’s dedication to the society. Congratulations, Leslie! FROM THE FOUNDATION Best-in-Class Content It has been my pleasure to serve as chair of the ASM Materials Education Foundation for the past three years. As you know, it has been a difficult period, but one in which I believe the Founda- tion has come out of stronger and with newmethods and tools at our disposal. We are now ready to take on the chal- lenges of growth and expansion. Over the summer, our teachers and students engaged in hands-on experiments and learn- ing activities that provided insight into all the STEM fields, with a special emphasis on materials science and engineer- ing. The ASM Materials Camps for teachers and students were online again this year, but each participant received a supply kit and there was vigorous remote learning and collaboration. Volunteers and Master Teachers kept partici- pants engaged and encouraged them to apply their learning to real-life examples. ASM Materials Education Foundation curriculum and programming truly inspire the next genera- tion of leaders and professionals. Our professional develop- ment is as well regarded as any program I’ve ever seen. Here is one example: “I am really impressed with this camp overall – espe- cially since it was online. I have a master’s degree in chem- istry where I studied nanoparticle synthesis and I also took several materials science classes in undergrad and grad school. However, I still learned new things (including how to approach this subject in a high school classroom). This was also the best online training that I’ve had – the activities and instructors were engaging and held my interest.” – ASM Materials Camp for Teachers 2021 participant The best-in-class content in our ASM Materials Camp develops a pipeline of talent to address the most important problems in our physical world, including climate change, sustainability, and a resilient economy. ASM Materials Edu- cation Foundation continues to sustain and grow our pro- gramming to reach more teachers and students. With your help, we will expand our support to teachers and students, making a difference in many lives. To learn more about the mission and activities of the ASM Materials Education Foun- dation, visit www.asmfoundation.org . I will become immediate past chair this month and the Foundation will be in the capable hands of Chip Keough. Exciting new projects will launch soon and I will continue to support and participate in the important work of the ASM Materials Education Foundation. Please join me. Glenn S.
