HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | JULY 2026 51 ASM Announces 2026-2027 Student Board Members The ASM Board of Trustees values the insights, ideas, and participation of Material Advantage students. The Student Board Member program provides the opportunity to attend four board meetings where the students will meet and work with leading technical professionals and gain leadership skills that will benefit them throughout their career. The next deadline for submissions is May 1, 2027. Details can be found on the ASM website. Wenchi Liu Northwestern University Wenchi Liu is a third-year student at Northwestern University pursuing a B.S. in materials science and engineering, with a second major in physics. Her academic and research interests focus on semiconductors and superconducting thin-film oxides. Liu is involved in undergraduate research in both Professor Mark Hersam’s research group, where she has worked on MoS₂ and carbon nanotube neuromorphic circuits for more energy-efficient AI hardware, and Professor Jennifer Fowlie’s Quantum Oxide Layers Lab, where she works on the growth and processing of epitaxial nickelate thin films to better understand the mechanisms underlying high-temperature superconductivity. Liu is also involved in materials science outreach and student leadership, serving as captain of the TMS Materials Bowl team and previously as president of the Materials Science Club. As an ASM International Student Board Member, she is excited to help strengthen student engagement, professional development, and connections across the materials community. Sofía González Espinosa The Instituto Tecnológico de Morelia, Mexico Sofía González Espinosa is a sophomore materials engineering student at the Instituto Tecnológico de Morelia, Mexico. She has a strong interest in physical metallurgy, particularly in steels and heat treatment processes. Espinosa is a recipient of the Steel Intern Scholarship from the AIST Foundation and will complete an internship at TenarisTamsa. Within her student chapter, she serves as technical manager, contributing to academic and industry engagement activities. Espinosa participated in the materials engineering conference in the structural dome competition. Currently, she is involved in a research project on the effect of agitation during oil 2026-27 STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS Espinosa Liu quenching of AISI 9254 steel. Her interests include microstructural characterization and the relationship between processing, structure, and properties. She is committed to her professional growth and to contributing to the future of the materials industry. Andrew J. Gillespie Purdue University Andrew J. Gillespie is a Ph.D. student in mechanical engineering at Purdue University. He began his engineering education in 2019 at Ivy Tech Community College before pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Purdue University Indianapolis. Gillespie’s research in additive manufacturing began in his first semester at Purdue. Since then, he has engaged with the materials science community through various conferences and organizations. Alongside his research background, Gillespie developed a passion for teaching and mentoring, helping younger students in early engineering courses. He aims to become a professor and help foster a love of science in the next generation, while pushing the boundaries of additive manufacturing. Nominations Sought for 2027 ASM/TMS Distinguished Lectureship in Materials & Society Nominations are currently being accepted for the ASM/ TMS Distinguished Lectureship in Materials & Society. The lecture was established in 1971 and is jointly sponsored by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) and ASM International. The topic of the lecture shall fall within these objectives: • To clarify the role of materials science and engineering in technology and in society in its broadest sense. • To present an evaluation of progress made in developing new technology for the ever-changing needs of technology and society. • To define new frontiers for materials science and engineering. Qualifications of the lecturer include: • A person experienced in national or industrial policymaking in the field of materials science and engineering. • An eminent individual who has an overview of technology and society in which technology and society are affected by development in materials science and engineering. • A person associated with government, industry, research, or education.
