HIGHLIGHTS ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES | MAY 2026 49 TSS Emerging Professional Membership Program: Engage the Next Generation of Thermal Spray Professionals The ASM Thermal Spray Society (TSS) invites students and early-career professionals to take advantage of a unique opportunity to grow their careers and connect with industry leaders. This program provides valuable industry insights, professional development opportunities, and access to a network of academics, researchers, and practitioners. Participants receive a one-year membership in ASM International and TSS, free access to ITSC conference proceedings, TSS eNews, and discussion groups, along with discounts on education and publications. For more information, visit asminternational.org/tss. Deatherage Recognized for 40 Years at ASM New and Returning Courses for 2026 ASM is pleased to announce three upcoming courses— two returning favorites and one brand-new offering. Practical Fracture Mechanics (July 27–28) returns to the schedule, equipping professionals in the auto- motive, aerospace, pipeline, and petroleum industries with a strong foundation in how components crack and fail, with integrated example problems that reinforce key concepts in fatigue crack growth and stress corrosion cracking. Introduction to Thermal Spray (August 3–4) also returns, freshly updated by ASM Thermal Spray Society Training Committee experts, ensuring comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of thermal spray technology, equipment, operation, safety, and characterization. New this year, Principles of Failure Analysis in Engineering Components: Procedures, Failure Modes and Case Studies in Boilers, Heat Exchangers, and Pressure EMERGING PROFESSIONALS Vessels (December 7–9) is organized over three days, progressing from essential failure analysis procedures and mechanisms—including fatigue, corrosion, and high- temperature failures—to a specialized focus on failures in boilers, heat exchangers, and pressure vessels. Enrollment is open for all 2026 courses. For a complete list of ASM courses, visit asminternational.org/ learning/courses. EMERGING PROFESSIONALS Rewards of Professional Chapter Participation I became involved in ASM as a postdoctoral researcher, attending my first meetings virtually due to COVID restrictions. Coming from a background in chemistry, the variety of speakers and topics has proven beneficial both as a primer to the wide variety of specialties within materials science and as inspiration in my own research. Casual participation resulted in professional development and connections to materials science colleagues both within and outside my place of work. It has been especially rewarding to talk with graduate students at the University of Tennessee during meetings and encourage high school students to pursue interests in the sciences at local outreach events. Volunteering on the local executive Jeane Deatherage (left) is celebrating her 40th ASM Anniversary in May, having worked many of those years with the Materials Education Foundation. She was recognized by the Master Teachers at their training session on April 11. During the event, longtime volunteer Peg Jones, FASM, presented her with a special plaque from the Detroit Chapter. Congratulations, Jeane! Chiller corrosion in a heat exchanger after a leak allowed process water in the refrigerant and vice versa.
